About the Project
The overall aim of the project is to draw attention to the lives of people who are separated by walls. This project will use new media and bring together artists, researchers and children from countries such as Cyprus, Germany, Israel, Northern Ireland and Palestine with history of walls in order to find ways to overcome the physical barriers and extinguish the fear and despair caused by the mental and cultural walls.
Structure
This call is addressed to artists/photographers who are keen to participate in the 1) process of dialogue through the photographs of the wall “divided” countries; 2) participate in the conference; 3) contribute 80 photographs for the artistic installation in Jerusalem, Israel; 4) create a workshop for children out of their wall experience; and 5) contribute to the publication (print and media).
Main Objectives
1) To take photos that define the daily lives of people living in Cyprus, Germany, Israel, Northern Ireland and Palestine;
2) To collaborate with a photographer/artist coming from the opposite side of his/her country;
3) To link the artistic process with the scientific research on the basis of the wall topics;
What we can offer
Selected artists/photographers will receive a production budget and honorarium amounting to 3,000 Euros, return economy airfare from Europe to Israel and 7 nights hotel accommodation and meal for the duration of the set activities in Israel.
Technical equipment and support will be available for the projection/installation.
The photo stories will be compiled on DVD, documentation in print and media and works of the selected photographers on the project will be disseminated through the Challenging Walls international network.
Timing and Deadline
Selected photographers are expected to work simultaneously in the respective countries within a period of two months between April and May 2007. Edited photographs and photo stories will have to be ready by the first week of June.

**Walkscreen will document the whole process in mixed media and use all materials to be produced for Challenging Walls for the purposes of evaluation and advocacy.

- Submit a completed application form along a portfolio of your works on digital format that best represent your work.
- Personal Statement addressing the following questions:

- What is it about photography that you feel most passionately about? What/who has inspired you to become a photographer and how has your experience encouraged you to pursue this career? Please include a personal biography.
- What are your current photo assignments and/or projects?
- Why do you think Challenging Walls is appropriate for you? What do you hope to get out of participating in this project? What can you contribute?
- How do think you can collaborate with the photographer coming from the opposite side of the country where you live? How do you think scientific research/methods can enrich your artistic work?
Criteria for Artists
The candidate should be:
- A national of the following countries: Cyprus, Germany*, Israel*, Northern Ireland and Palestine;

- Greek Cypriot – Turkish Cypriot
- Former East Germany
- Palestinian
- Northern Ireland Catholic and Northern Ireland Protestant
- Available and willing to participate in the activities set by the organizers for Challenging Walls i.e. photo shoot, conference, children’s workshop, art installation;
- Submit a proposed agenda for the photo shoot in his/her country;
- Submit a portfolio of previous works on digital format to Walkscreen and the local partners;
- Able to collaborate with fellow photographer/s, researchers, cultural managers and organizers for Challenging Walls throughout the work process taking place between March-July 2007;
- Able to develop a storyboard together with the respective partners in the countries for the final presentation in Jerusalem;
- Fluent and articulate in spoken English;
- Open-minded, willing and able to work/collaborate with the other participating countries;
- Willing to share his/her own experiences and knowledge through photography about the wall topic/s in his/her own country;
- Able to compose an integrated photo story in collaboration with the photographer from the opposite side;
- Technically strong at a very advanced level in photography;
- Present the photo story as a part of the artistic installation in Jerusalem, Israel;
- Willing to authorise the organisers to document and use copies of the photos from the installations for the workshop, conference, PR and publication without royalty costs. **
