Michael Levin

Art and Architectural Historian Prof. Michael Levin, born in Jerusalem, Israel, studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, Princeton University, USA, and the Courtauld Institute of Art, London University, UK, where he earned his Ph.D.

He is currently Head of Culture Studies and lecturer of Modern and Contemporary Art and Architecture in the Faculty of Design at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Ramat-Gan, Israel, and in the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. He is also co-head of the new postgraduate studies in conservation.
He taught at the Department of Art History at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem (1973-80, 1996-97) and at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem (1993-2000), and served as Head of General Studies at Bezalel (1995-1999).

As Art Advisor to the Mayors of the metropolitan cities Jerusalem (1978- 85), and Tel Aviv (1987-95), he fostered the installation of a large number of public works of art in both cities.
He served as Chief Curator and later as Director of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (1986-90), and sponsors artistic activity in various capacities, e.g. Founding Chairman of the Tel Aviv Artists Studios and Gallery , president of Aica Israel former member of the board of directors and president of Icomos Israel, art advisor to Israel Electric Corporation and former Chairman of the Visual Arts Section of the Israel Art Council.

He is likewise a member of the Visual Arts Committee of the Rabinovich Foundation for the Arts, Tel Aviv, member of the Board of Directors at Keter Publishing House, Jerusalem, the Acquisitions Committee of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, the Yad Vashem Art Committee, Jerusalem, the Jerusalem Art Committee and the advisory Preservation Committee of the City Engineer of Jerusalem.

Michael Levin has curated exhibitions at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; the Ein-    Hod Sculpture Biennale; the Venice Biennale; the Sao Paulo Biennale; the International Art Fair, Basel; and the Jewish Museums, New York and Berkeley.

His publications include The Modern Museum, Sculpture in Jerusalem, White City - International Style Architecture in Israel: Portrait of an Era, Santiago Calatrava: Artworks (Birkhauser, 2003), and the forthcoming book Architecture in Israel: East or West (Skira 2007).
He is co-editor of the Israeli City :Last Hebrew City?, 2006, (Resling) and Between Sderot and Tel Aviv – Center—Periphery Relations in Israeli Culture, 2007, (Resling).

He was awarded the Israel Museum Joseph Hazen Award for Twentieth Century Art (Israel) in 1981, and was named Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France) in 1991.
