workshop
Workshop on 9-10 July 2007
at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute and the Al Quds University

This workshop will marks the first meeting of minds amongst the 16 international photographers, researchers, curators and cultural managers who have been working on the Challenging Walls project since March 2007.   The project, which embraces four regions with history of walls and segregation: Germany, Cyprus, Ireland and Israel/Palestine,  will facilitate the exchange of personal stories and realities in the respective wall divided environments.  The idea behind this intimate meeting is to enable the artists and academicians to touch base with one another as individuals, have a person-to-person contact with like-minded  people who posses diverse  knowledge on the issue of walls and separation.

The eight photographers who worked as 'couples' with a photographer from the opposite side of his/her region, will present the works that they have done for Challenging Walls.  This will illustrate the process on how each of the pairs managed to collaborate and/or individually approach the subject through photography.  Considering that all the photographers involved were raised within the parameters of existing physical and mental walls, Challening Walls hopes to find the fresh perspectives that surfaced through the photography assignment over the two-month period that they worked on the project.

The researchers, curators and cultural managers, who served as advisors to the Challening Walls team from its early developments, will contribute another layer to the exchange process by sharing their experiences in setting-up and implementing related projects/programmes.

Through this exercise, Challenging Walls aspires to establish an atmosphere that will inspire the participants and draw new inspirations for both inter-cultural and multi-displinary dialogue that can potentially move towards the development and continuity of similar art-peace initiatives in the areas mentioned above.
